Being a Karate Parent

KUMIAI-RYU MARTIAL ARTS SYSTEM
BEING A KARATE (KR LITTLE NINJAS) PARENT

Some helpful tips on how you can help your Child succeed and develop on their Martial Arts journey from White Belt to the world recognised KRMAS BLACK BELT by:-

  • Always complimenting your Child after class. Children should always associate Karate [KR Little Ninjas] with feelings of success and pride.
  • Be there to watch your child at least two thirds of time. Get involved, be your child’s number one fan and cheer leader.
  • Attend Presentations and bring your relatives and friends. Your child has put in a lot of dedication to achieve their next level, so celebrate their achievement with them.
  • Try to avoid being a drop off parent. It’s a well-known fact that kids who drop out of Karate typically have parents who don’t take the time to get involved.
  • Getting into a regular schedule as much as possible so children can mentally prepare for class straight after school. Leave the TV off after school, especially before Karate [KR Little Ninjas].
  • Leading by example. Eat healthy, drink water, stay active and have a positive attitude. Deal with stress and challenges the same way you would like your child to.
  • Help with their Karate [KR Little Ninjas] homework. Watch the DVD’s supplied and ensure they are practising their Kata and other moves at least twice a week at home.
  • Follow and encourage the Dojo Etiquette which can be found in the Black and Red member’s booklet.
  • Please leave the phone in the car. Give yourself a break from it for the duration of the class.
  • Do not intervene in the lesson, our Instructors are professionals and know how to deal with most situations including emergency First Aid. If deemed necessary they will call you to floor.
  • Keep conversations to a low level and never call out to your Child whilst they are training.
  • All Dojo guests are requested to sit quietly so other guests can observe the lesson in a relaxed environment. For everyone’s safety please remain in the dedicated viewing areas.
  • Never take you Child out of their lesson or Dojo without first consulting the Instructor as they may not notice the Child has been removed and this will cause all sorts of distress.
  • Instructors will discipline students in a professional firm way using our three rules method:-
    • Firstly the key message of safety and respect will be reinforced each and every lesson.
    • If students are being disruptive a clear message will be given about correct behaviour.
    • This will be followed by a personal message to the student who is still misbehaving especially if they continue to be disruptive to other students.
    • If the problem continues the student will be removed from the class and asked to sit facing the wall behind the class with their forehead resting against the wall for about 2 minutes. After this time the Instructor will then have a private chat with them to see if all is okay and ask them if they would like to join back in and continue to train correctly.
    • Some situations or mitigating circumstances occasionally call for students to just sit out the remainder of the class. We generally find they are very tired on that day or are perhaps feeling unwell. In some instances there may be some other underlying issues a new baby, moving house, changes at School etc.
    • Continued inappropriate behaviour or disruptive behaviour will result in a consultation with the students’ parents to work out some further strategies to help resolve the issue.
  • We always invite interaction with members and their families especially Parents. At the conclusion of the lesson please feel free to ask questions of the Instructor about your Childs progress. However be mindful of time constraints. Also a kind positive word to the Instructor is always very much appreciated as they are doing their very best for your Child!
  • Our goal is to ensure all who attend a KRMAS Dojo have an enjoyable, rewarding experience that will have a positive influence on those training with KRMAS for their entire life.
